Collective stewardship

Our collaborative approach

In the mainstream media, most decisions are made individually, within the newsroom, and without transparency or accountability to community. We wanted to flip that model.

In 2023, we began inviting community members — from loko iʻa (fishpond) stewards, to kumu ʻŌlelo (language teachers), to community organizers — to help us co-create Kaheāwai Media.

We ended up with a web of groups that collectively steward our work and ensure we stay accountable to our values and community.
